چکیده

The present study concerns experimental and fin ite element analysis of carbon epoxy and carbon epoxy carbon nanotube composites to estimate interlaminar shear strength. Mechanical properties such as elastic ratios, thickness are varied for double notched specimen and the corresponding deflections and interlaminar shear strengths are estimated by ANSYS. From simple ru le of mixtures, equivalent orthotropic material properties are estimated. These properties are provided as input in ANSYS to generate finite element model. Solid layered element is used to model double notch specimen. To estimate the properties of carbon epoxy carbon nanotube composite, init ially fin ite element model of matrix and carbon nanotube is generated by properties individual material properties of both the materials. From the obtained stretch and stress, the equivalent material property of combined matrix and carbon nanotube is achieved. This property is provided as input in simple rule of mixtures to find out the equivalent orthotropic materials are determined. It is inferred that experiment results are in good agreement with results generated by ANSYS. The superiority of the presence of carbon nanotube in the composite is proved from experimental and finite element technique from the estimated fracture parameters.

Experimental Study on Amine-Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes’ Effect on the Thermomechanical Properties of CNT/Epoxy Nano-composites

This paper investigated the effect of the amine-functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the thermomechanical properties of CNT/epoxy nanocomposites. Mechanical stirring and ultra-sonication were utilized to uniformly disperse CNTs into the epoxy matrix. Non-functionalized and amine-functionalized CNTs with different weight percentages (wt. %) were mixed into the epoxy resin. Using standard te...

Improved Strength and Toughness of Carbon Woven Fabric Composites with Functionalized MWCNTs

This investigation examines the role of carboxyl functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (COOH-MWCNTs) in the on- and off-axis flexure and the shear responses of thin carbon woven fabric composite plates. The chemically functionalized COOH-MWCNTs were used to fabricate epoxy nanocomposites and, subsequently, carbon woven fabric plates to be tested on flexure and shear. In addition to the n...

PREDICTING THE STIFFNESS OF BIAXIAL BRAIDED FIBER COMPOSITES BY INCORPORATION OF CARBON NANO FIBER

In this study, carbon nano fibers (CNFs) were mixed into epoxy resin through a magnetic stirrer and again mixed using ultra sonicator. Using hand layup technique, biaxial braided fiber composites were prepared with unfilled, 0.2, 0.5 and 1 wt% CNF. Tensile test and shear test was performed to identify the tensile strength and shear strength of the composites. Fractured surface of the tensile sp...

Effect of Epoxy Functional Groups on the Properties of Carbon Fiber-Epoxy Composites

Matrix resins of carbon fiber-epoxy composites with different numbers of epoxy functional groups were prepared, and their properties were compared to optimize the matrix resin composition. To understand the bonding strengths between the carbon fiber and epoxy resins in monofilaments and micro-sized resin beads, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) was measured using the microdroplet technique....
